German Boxer Dog

Having descended from strong canines used in hunting and fighting, this breed is characterized by a tenacious grip, a well muscled body and amazing intelligence. The tail is usually docked; ear cropping and dewclaws removal are optional. Males stand 22-25 inches at the shoulders; females are 21-24 inches. The coat of these animals is shiny and close fitting; it can be brindle, fawn, red and white, but some associations don’t register white dogs. The most common coat pattern is fawn with white spots and a black mask.

This breed developed in the 19th century from the mastiff-type breeds: the Bullenbeiszer and the Barenbeiszer. These creatures were valued for their strength, agility, intelligence and courage; they were used for different purposes: bull baiting, cattle herding and guarding, hunting big game and pulling carts. Up to the 20th century, breeding was indiscriminate. The studbook and the breed standard appeared in 1904 and since that time it has become a favorite pet for many families. Nowadays this breed is used for watchdogging, police and military work, search and rescue, performing tricks, obedience and as a family companion.
